One of the most important skills in the kitchen is how to use a knife. Each week, we introduce the skills necessary to accomplish 1 task in a cleaner, more efficient way. Today we focus on knife skills for how to hull strawberries.
Do you know how to hull strawberries? Hulling is a special technique that means to “remove the green part.” Why not simply slice straight across the top? Well that creates extra food waste (as you can see in the video). It also gives your strawberries a very flat look when you slice them. Hulling preserves more of the fruit and also the beautiful curve of the berry.
Always make sure you have a clean cutting board, a chef’s knife and a towel.
Let’s go!
Step by Step Instructions on How to Hull Strawberries
Step 1: Hold a paring knife in your cutting hand and the strawberry in the other. This is one of those times when a chef’s knife isn’t the best tool for the job. You want a smaller knife so that you have better control.
Step 2: Using just the tip, angle the knife at a 45 degree angle . Then slide it UNDERNEATH the green top.
Step 3: Use your thumb to press the knife down and slowly rotate the STRAWBERRY. So you’re holding the knife still and at an angle. It’s a little unusual since your moving the fruit and not the knife. Think about rotating the strawberry around the tip of the knife. That’s what you’re going for.
Step 4: There you go, a hulled strawberry. There should be little to no red attached to the top. And you can slice the hulled strawberry into quarters to create beautiful slices.
What to impress everyone with your skills? Grab a pint of fresh strawberries and get some practice in.
