One of the most important skills in the kitchen is how to use a knife. Each week, we introduce the skills necessary to accomplish 1 task in a cleaner, more efficient way. Today we focus on knife skills for how to slice apples.

Apple slices make perfect lunch foods. They are crispy and sweet. You can dip them in peanut butter or honey. And they travel well. But slicing apples can get a little tricky. Do you need a knife and a peeler and corer? No thanks! So here’s the fastest, cleanest way to slice those apples using just your knife.

Always make sure you have a clean cutting board, a chef’s knife and a towel.

Let’s go!

It’s not the size, it’s how you use it.

Step by Step Instructions on How to Slice Apples

Step 1: Slice the apple in half. The easiest way to to do this is by standing the apple on the cutting board and slicing directly through the stem.

Step 2: Rotate the whole apple 90 degrees and slice in half again. So once again, stand your apple straight up and slice through the stem. This is a serious time saver. Now you have 4 quarters.

Step 3: Lay 1 quarter on it’s side and hold the knife at a 45 degree angle to slice out the seeds. Ta-da! No need for a corer. Plus, this also creates a flat surface for slicing. Repeat with the other 3 quarters.

Step 4: Lay 1 quarter face down (on the flat surface) and cut 4-5 even slices. Repeat on the the remaining quarters.

Step 5: Ta-da beautiful apple slices, ready for any pie, tart or school lunch. If you want to get your kids involved, give them the sliced apples and have them cut apple pieces. Perfect for a Waldorf salad.
